The weather may be starting to cool down, but 2011’s Fall Fashion trends are smoking hot! In 2011, designers are experimenting with earthtones and burnt colors – delicious oranges, reds, burgundy and yellow hues – and jewelry seems to be bigger and bolder than ever- think “Statement Jewelry”.
My favorite Fall-color gemstones are: Jasper, Amber, Tiger Eye, Prehnite, Malachite, Emerald, Ruby and Citrine. Here are some of my favorite trends of the season, and the best pieces to accompany them.
70’s fashion:
The 70’s are definitely in vogue again, with several looks to choose from! Whether you’re the waifish bohemian or the glamorous sophisticate, the clothes this season will have you reaching for your time-machine.
Think bohemian fabrics, high-waisted or flared pants paired with stacked heals, and sophisticated blouses in satin and silk.
The bohemian flavor continues into jewelry – pretty designs with an edge; oversized rings and earrings, and complex, layered necklaces and bracelets. Look for beaded and bangle bracelets, long pendant necklaces and gemstone necklaces of all types. Pair earthtone tops with brighter gemstones like turquoise, emerald and ruby or tops with bold colors with tiger eye, wood, jasper and antiqued metals. Look for jewelry with natural gemstones and organic elements combined with sterling silver, copper or brass, with filigree or nature-themed components.
Transition from day to night by adding shimmering fabrics and choosing styles that show off those curves. Don’t be afraid of tight tops with billowing sleeves or draping dresses with plunging necklines. Sexiness is in!
Oriental Opulence:
When I think of this trend, I’m inspired by geishas and orchids and silks. And that’s just what this trend is about – invoking the romance and mystery of the orient with exquisite details. The key is subtly – you don’t need a full-on kimono and heavy make-up to pull off this look.
Think earthy colors, gathered silks, obi belts and sashes, draped tops and dresses, flowing fabrics, floral hair accessories and exotic jewelry.
Look for silk flower hair clips, long earrings and jewelry in richly colored gemstones and sleek metals.
Plunging necklines:
Are you ready to be a real femme fatale? This season is all about a deep V-neckline, balanced with a choker necklace or plunging statement necklace for effortless glamour. Plunging necklines aren’t for everyone, but the best way to wear this trend is to choose a relaxed fit in a heavier fabric like velvet or knit, and to pair with a modest maxi-skirt or wide-leg pant.
Look for statement necklaces with large pendants and faceted gemstones or choose a long pair of statement earrings instead.
Solid jewelry:
Finally, a trend that can’t be tied to a single era. Solid metal jewelry can be a modern, minimalist statement or the invocation of an ancient warrior. Solid jewelry doesn’t need any embellishments or frou frou – it’s all about letting the natural beauty of the metal shine! Look for cuff bracelets, hoop earrings, thick chokers and chains. The key to any minimalist statement is to invest in high-quality pieces – look for flawless finishing. Pair these with your 1970s-inspired bohemian frock or sharply tailored blouse for the perfect Fall 2011 look.
Other trends to watch out for:
Circles:
Circles seem to feature heavily in this seasons jewelry trends – from large hoop earrings and oversized rings, to the trend for large pendants with a Victorian or vintage feel.
Chunky Filigree:
These beautiful designs were big last year, but now, filigree is simplified and oversized – you can dress up a simple t-shirt or add a large filigree pendant to a plunging v-line blouse.
Pearls:
Pearls never seem to go out of style and this Fall they will be combined with layers of chains and vintage-inspired components.
When it comes to jewelry, think versatility, especially if different Fall trends appeal to you! Look for individual pieces that you can pair together to create a layered look, or that you can wear alone, in styles that will transition from the office to a night out. Combine some new treasures with your favorite pieces of jewelry already in your jewelry box to make your investment last for years.
Fall fashion is not for the shrinking violet. Create your own unique look inspired by these bold, bright and layered trends!
